Prime example are the first 2 Dwarven maps (Deepmir, hall of heroes) where you'll need a long breath to complete them (unless you know how to trigger the victory condition). So early missions can become really hard, if playing on hard difficulty. However, they become CPU Kings on hard difficulty: The external 125 gold income means that they have enough gold to buy equally-aligned neutral towns in early game, and once they have established a big empire, they can afford a big army thanks to the x 2.5 gold income bonus. So most of their towns don't produce units and they barely expand. Let's take CPU Squires for example: There's not much gold left after paying the upkeep (4 gold for level 1 unit, 6 gold level 2, 8 gold level 3, 10 gold level 4). There you'll usually meet CPU Squires and CPU Knights on normal difficulty. The effect is very noticeable in the earlier maps of the campaign. So CPU Squire becomes CPU Lord CPU Knight becomes CPU King and so on. Playing the campaign on hard shifts the AI by 2 levels. I think it was +25 % mana for CPU Lord and +50 % mana for CPU Emperor. There's also a +12.5 % mana income bonus per level, but that's rather unimportant. The AI level can be seen in the diplomatics menu.
